Join CLF-LA for our February webinar, with speakers Jonathan Broyles, PhD, WELL AP, LEED Green Associate, EIT, and Mikaela DeRousseau, PhD. See webinar description and speaker bios below.

Currently, environmental product declarations (EPDs) for ready-mix concrete are mandated by product category rules (PCRs) to report global warming potential (GWP) of concrete mixtures but not the intended application. Omission of such data impedes the ability to make true direct comparison between EPDs and to establish precise GWP benchmarks. To elucidate the importance and utility of specifying a target application in ready-mix concrete EPDs, this presentation conveys the key findings from a meta-analysis of the GWP of 47,413 ready-mix concrete EPDs.

We found that 83.3% of application-specific GWP distributions are statistically different, underscoring the need to specify a target application in ready-mix concrete EPDs. Additional statistical results and other GWP-influencing EPD characteristics will be discussed to help shed light on how to enable fairer comparisons between ready-mix concrete EPDs and better aid the establishment of low-carbon benchmarks.

Speaker Bios:

Jonathan Broyles, PhD, WELL APP, LEED Green Associate, EIT is a current impact fellow in the MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium working with Dr. Jeremy Gregory and Professor Caitlin Mueller to determine solutions to minimize Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, especially those attributed to construction materials and the built environment. Jonathan holds a PhD in Architectural Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, where he researched in Dr. Nathan Brown's Building Design Group. Following his graduate studies, Jonathan was a postdoctoral research associate in Dr. Wil Srubar's Living Materials Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder. Jonathan has expertise in several research fields, including the reduction of embodied carbon emissions, structural engineering, computational design, and architectural acoustics.

Mikaela DeRousseau, PhD is an embodied carbon and life cycle assessment (LCA) consultant and owner of DeRousseau Consulting. Her expertise includes analysis and development of EPDs for construction products, LCA standards, embodied carbon policy implementation, and data analysis. She previously served as Senior Data and Methodology Manager at Building Transparency, where she worked on LCA methodology and EPD data quality for reducing embodied carbon in construction. Mikaela holds a PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder, where her research focused on life cycle assessment of concrete mixtures and computational optimization of concrete mix designs.
